Book: Pride and Prejudice

Author: Jane Austen

Review: A splendid novel by the great Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice is a classic for a reason. The captivating story transports you to another time, into the lives and curious minds of mesmerising characters.

Summary: The story revolved around Elizabeth Bennet, the second of five daughters of Mr Bennet, a country gentleman. Things get interesting when Mr Bingley and his status-conscious friend, Mr Darcy move to their neighbourhood. Elizabeth and the seemingly proud Mr Darcy clash almost immediately upon meeting. As Elizabeth is frequently thrown into the company of Mr Darcy, she fails to understand his cold behaviour towards her.

A series of ill-fated events and misunderstandings deepen Elizabeth’s dislike of Darcy. Thus, she outright rejects Darcy’s unexpected confession of love and refuses him when he asks for her hand in marriage. In order to explain himself and the dire situation, Darcy writes to Elizabeth upon her return to her home, clearing all of the misunderstandings and lies that had been spread about his intentions. Once she learns the truth of the situation Elizabeth realises she had been unfair to Darcy and goes to meet him again. Upon meeting him, she notices a complete change in his behaviour and acknowledges her own attraction to him, finally accepting his proposal and ending the story on a happy note.
