Beaconhouse Student, Saud Afzal Among National Spelling Bee Champions News Story

Spelling Bee Competitions expand the student`s horizon beyond the classroom and enhance their process of learning. The DAWN Spelling Bee Competition was organised by the DAWN Media Group in partnership with the US Embassy, Islamabad in collaboration with The Oxford University Press, who provided judges. The competition was conducted in three age groups. The pool round for the 9 to 11 age-group was held on Oct 4 and 5, the 12 to 14 age-group on the 5 and 6 of October and the 15 to 17 age-group on Oct 7. The regional championship for all three age groups was held on Oct 8 at the Alhamra Cultural Complex Lahore. At least 160 schools from Lahore, Multan, Faisalabad, Sialkot, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Jhang, Okara, Sahiwal, Hafizabad, Layyah, Muzaffargarh, Sargodha, Kasur, Kharian, Bahawalpur, Muridke, Khanewal, Daska, Rahim Yar Khan and Sheikhupura took part in the regional championship round. Saud Afzal of Beaconhouse Gujrat Campus performed well and attained the runner-up position. The National Championship was held on November 1 in Islamabad, where regional champions of three age groups competed against one another. At least 7,000 children between 9 and 17 years from 720 schools from all over Pakistan participated in the "7th DAWN in Education National Spelling Bee Competition, 2011". Saud Afzal of Beaconhouse Gujrat Campus performed excellently at this level too and found himself on the victory stand once again.
