Green School Project at Beaconhouse Liberty Primary News Story

April 4, 2011: Beaconhouse Liberty Primary Branch, Lahore organised several green school activities, from April 4 to May 6, 2011. A handwork activity was organised from 4-22 April for Class III students. The aim was to promote the concept of ‘Reduce, Reuse, Recycle’.

Students collected resources like old bottles, cans, file covers, pencils, mirrors, papers, buttons, trimmings etc. Timetables were rearranged to provide class teachers with an opportunity to work in a 40 mins+ block art period with the art and subject teacher to complete the project. Handwork items were prepared and displayed for viewing by all classes.

A plantation week was organised in the school for all classes from 18-22 April. The focus of the activity was to encourage student to take care of plants. The activity also helped bring home the importance of greenery and inculcate a love of nature.

Each student planted a shrub in a patch that was allotted to each class and are responsible for looking after their plants. Teachers took upon themselves to beautify the front area.

An assembly was conducted to familiarise students with the concept of proper waste disposal in order to facilitate recycling. Bins were labelled, ‘glass, metal, plastic and paper’. Green volunteers were nominated to oversee proper disposal. Bird feeders were placed around the school for perishable waste.

A Poster-making and Poem-writing activity was organised on May 4, 2011. Class IV students were encouraged to express their views on environmental issues around them through art and writing.

A litter-free lunch day was organised in the campus on May 6, 2011 to get the parents involved in an effort to promote a healthy approach towards selection of eatables.

The objective is to plan and limit the use of plastic food containers in the form of lunch boxes and plastic bottles in the form of water bottles.
